Wanted Fugitive Dezi Freeman Killed in Shootout with Australian Police

After a 7-month manhunt, the fugitive suspected of murdering two police officers was fatally shot in a confrontation with authorities in Australia.
Dezi Freeman, a wanted fugitive accused of killing two police officers in August, has been shot dead by Australian authorities after a seven-month manhunt. The 28-year-old was the subject of an intense search since the fatal shooting in the town of Porepunkah.
According to police, Freeman opened fire on officers who approached him in a rural area near Wangaratta, approximately 240 kilometers northeast of Melbourne. Authorities say the confrontation erupted after they received a tip about the fugitive's location.
"When police attempted to arrest the man, he produced a firearm and shots were exchanged," Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill said in a press conference. "Regrettably, the male person has died at the scene as a result of the incident."
The two officers killed in the original August incident were Constable Glen Humphris and Senior Constable Kevin King, both of whom were fatally shot while responding to a routine call. Their deaths sparked a massive manhunt that spanned multiple states and involved hundreds of law enforcement personnel.
"This is a tragic outcome, but I'm glad the community can now have some closure," said Assistant Commissioner Hill. "Our thoughts remain with the families of the two officers who were killed, as well as the officers involved in this latest incident."
Authorities have not released details on how they located Freeman or what led to the fatal confrontation. The investigation into the original shootings and this latest incident is still ongoing.
This case has captivated the nation and shone a spotlight on the dangers faced by Australian law enforcement. Freeman's death brings an end to a lengthy manhunt, but the grief and impact of the tragedy will linger for the affected families and communities.
