Comedians Expose Rampant Sexual Harassment in the Comedy Industry

The comedy circuit in the UK has long been plagued by sexual harassment and abuse, with many female performers forced to rely on informal warning systems to try to keep themselves safe, a comedian has revealed in testimony to the UK Parliament's Equalities Committee.

Performers and campaigners told the committee that protections available to women in the industry are often limited or altogether absent, leaving them vulnerable to unwanted advances and misconduct from male colleagues and audience members. This pervasive issue, they said, frequently goes underreported due to a lack of proper reporting mechanisms and the precarious nature of many comedians' careers.

One anonymous comedian who spoke to the committee described how female performers use informal networks to warn each other about potentially dangerous individuals, but noted that this approach can sometimes expose women to further risks.
