Rivlin stated that Israel is a sovereign state that follows the rule of law, and that he will not intervene in the judicial process surrounding Netanyahu's corruption case.
The call for a pardon came after Netanyahu was indicted on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in a series of scandals. Trump, who has a longstanding relationship with Netanyahu, urged Rivlin to grant the Israeli leader a pardon before he leaves office in July.
