Oil Woes Hit Asia First Amid Global Fuel Crunch

The Iran-Ukraine war has disrupted oil flows, leading to fuel shortages across Asia. Experts warn this could signal the start of a broader global energy crisis.
As tensions between Iran and the West escalate over the war in Ukraine, Asia has found itself at the epicenter of a brewing global energy crisis. The disruptions to oil flows have hit the world's fastest-growing economies hardest, with fuel shortages spreading across the region and threatening to derail the post-pandemic economic recovery.
Asia's Vulnerability Exposed
Heavily reliant on imported oil and gas, Asian nations have borne the brunt of the supply chain disruptions caused by the geopolitical turmoil. Countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have seen fuel prices soar and motorists queuing for hours at the pumps as refineries struggle to keep up with demand.

"Asia is ground zero for this energy crisis," said Michal Meidan, director of the China Energy Programme at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies. "These countries are the most vulnerable because they have limited strategic reserves and negotiating power."
The situation has been exacerbated by the recent OPEC+ decision to only marginally increase oil production, leaving global supply struggling to keep pace with recovering demand. This has forced Asian governments to implement emergency measures, from rationing fuel to tapping strategic reserves.
Ripple Effects Across the Globe
Experts warn that the Asian energy crunch could be a harbinger of a wider global crisis. As the world's manufacturing hub, disruptions to industrial and transportation fuel supplies in Asia have the potential to ripple through global supply chains, affecting the production and delivery of goods worldwide.
"What we're seeing in Asia is a preview of what could happen globally if this energy crisis deepens," said Tilak Doshi, an energy economist at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. "The dominoes are starting to fall, and it's only a matter of time before the reverberations are felt everywhere."
Governments and policymakers are scrambling to find solutions, from boosting renewable energy investment to exploring alternative fuel sources. But with the geopolitical tensions showing no signs of easing, the road ahead appears rocky for the global economy.
