Is Big Tech on the Brink of a Reckoning? Experts Weigh In

Allegations of prioritizing profit over user safety have sparked comparisons between social media giants and the tobacco industry. Explore the growing legal and regulatory pressures facing tech leaders.
As tech giants like Meta (formerly Facebook) face escalating legal and regulatory scrutiny, a new question is emerging: Is Big Tech headed for a Big Tobacco-style reckoning? The parallels between the two industries are striking, as both have been accused of prioritizing profits over consumer wellbeing.
Just as tobacco companies were found to have knowingly concealed the health risks of smoking, social media platforms have been accused of being aware of the mental health and societal impacts of their platforms, yet choosing to downplay or ignore these issues. The legal heat on tech CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg is growing, with lawmakers and whistleblowers amplifying calls for greater accountability.
The comparison to Big Tobacco is not lost on industry watchers. "There are so many parallels - the addiction, the targeting of young people, the awareness of the harm," says Margaret O'Mara, a professor of history at the University of Washington who studies the tech industry. "The question is whether we'll see a similar reckoning."
Indeed, the revelations from Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen have fueled this narrative, exposing how the company's own research showed Instagram was harming teenage girls' mental health, yet the company did little to address the problem. This has led to a surge of regulatory activity, with lawmakers vowing to hold tech giants accountable.
"There is a real parallelthere," says Paul Barrett, deputy director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights. "The tobacco industry knew for decades that its products were harmful and addictive, but covered it up. Now we're seeing revelations that social media companies understood the risks of their platforms, especially for young users, but didn't disclose or act on that knowledge."
The stakes are high for tech leaders, as the potential consequences could mirror those faced by Big Tobacco. Major legal settlements, stricter regulations, and even criminal prosecutions are all on the table as lawmakers seek to rein in the power of these digital behemoths.
Whether this leads to a true "reckoning" for Big Tech remains to be seen, but the parallels are undeniable. As the public and policymakers grow more disillusioned with the tech industry's behavior, the pressure is mounting for these companies to fundamentally reform their practices - or face a fate similar to Big Tobacco's downfall.
