Is Fragile US-Iran Ceasefire Already Unraveling?

Experts weigh in on the tenuous state of the US-Iran ceasefire and whether a return to war can be avoided if nuclear talks fail.
The tentative ceasefire between the United States and Iran, forged in the wake of the 2020 assassination of Qassem Soleimani, appears to be on shaky ground. Despite ongoing negotiations aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the future of the fragile truce remains uncertain. Analysts are divided on whether a diplomatic breakthrough can be achieved or if the two countries are once again headed towards a dangerous military confrontation.
In the months since the ceasefire was established, both sides have continued to engage in provocative actions that risk reigniting tensions. Iran has repeatedly tested ballistic missiles and conducted drone attacks against US forces in the region, while the US has carried out airstrikes against Iranian-backed militias in Syria. At the same time, the nuclear negotiations have stalled, with neither side willing to make the concessions necessary to restore the JCPOA.

"Both sides have a strong incentive to avoid a direct military confrontation," says Trita Parsi, the executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. "Iran knows that it cannot win a war against the US, and the US is wary of being drawn into another costly and unpopular Middle Eastern conflict."
Others, however, are more pessimistic. "The ceasefire is hanging by a thread," warns Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. "If the nuclear talks collapse and the US continues to ratchet up pressure on Iran, the likelihood of a miscalculation or unintended escalation increases significantly."

If a deal can be reached that satisfies both sides, it could pave the way for a more durable de-escalation of tensions. But if the talks fail, the risk of a renewed cycle of retaliation and counterattack will loom large, potentially dragging the two countries back into the abyss of war.
As the world watches with bated breath, the delicate balance between diplomacy and brinkmanship will continue to define the precarious relationship between the United States and Iran.
