Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro is seeking the dismissal of charges brought against him by the United States government, alleging that the US has blocked the legal defense funds needed for his case.
Maduro's lawyer, Jose Amalio Graterol, stated that his client's right to legal counsel of his choice has been denied due to actions taken by the US government. According to Graterol, the US has frozen or confiscated assets and funds that were intended to be used for Maduro's legal defense, effectively depriving him of his ability to mount a proper legal challenge.
The charges against Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, were brought by the US Department of Justice in 2020. He is accused of participating in a narco-terrorism conspiracy, drug trafficking, and money laundering, among other allegations. Maduro has consistently denied these charges, claiming they are politically motivated and part of a broader effort by the US to undermine his government.
