Elderly Nuns Defy Authority to Return Home After Decades

Three octogenarian nuns escaped from a care home and broke back into their lifelong convent in Austria, sparking a global debate over their right to remain.
Three elderly nuns who spent most of their lives in an Austrian convent are a step closer to being allowed to return and stay there, according to sources close to the case. Sisters Bernadette, Regina, and Rita, all in their early to late 80s, made headlines last September when they escaped from a care home to break back into their former convent in the castle-like monastery of Elsbethen near Salzburg.
The nuns' daring escape and subsequent fight to remain in their home of decades has become a cause célèbre, attracting international attention and sympathy. The Catholic Church and local authorities had previously sought to relocate the elderly women to the care facility, but their bold actions have now put them a step closer to being allowed to stay in the convent.
