Court Challenge Seeks to Lift Trump-Era Steel Tariffs

A new legal case aims to overturn the temporary steel and aluminum tariffs that former President Trump imposed after the Supreme Court struck down his earlier tariffs.
A high-profile court battle is underway over the steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. The case, filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade, seeks to overturn the temporary tariffs that were put in place after the Supreme Court struck down Trump's earlier tariff orders.
The Tariff Saga
The legal saga began in 2018 when Trump used a little-known trade law, known as Section 232, to impose sweeping 25% tariffs on steel imports and 10% tariffs on aluminum imports. These tariffs were intended to protect U.S. jobs and industries, but they also led to retaliatory tariffs from U.S. trading partners and significantly impacted American businesses and consumers.
Supreme Court Intervention
In 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump had overstepped his authority in imposing the original tariffs. The court found that the president had failed to properly justify the tariffs on national security grounds, as required by the trade law.
