GBE-N and IACC Partner to Advance UK Small Modular Reactor Project at Wylfa

GBE-N and Isle of Anglesey County Council have signed a collaborative agreement to support the deployment of UK Small Modular Reactors at the Wylfa site, a key step in the development of this innovative nuclear energy technology.
GBE-N, a leading nuclear technology company, and Isle of Anglesey County Council (IACC) have signed a groundbreaking Collaboration Agreement to support the delivery of UK Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at the Wylfa site on the island of Anglesey, Wales.
This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in the development of SMR technology in the UK, which has been identified as a critical component of the country's transition to a low-carbon energy future. The agreement outlines a framework for cooperation between GBE-N and IACC to tackle the various technical, regulatory, and community challenges associated with deploying SMRs at the Wylfa site.
Under the terms of the agreement, GBE-N and IACC will work together to streamline the planning and permitting processes, engage with local stakeholders, and ensure the project aligns with the council's sustainability and environmental goals. Additionally, the partners will collaborate on workforce development initiatives to build the specialized skills needed to construct and operate the SMR facility.
"This agreement is a testament to our shared commitment to advancing the deployment of SMRs in the UK," said John Smith, CEO of GBE-N. "By partnering with IACC, we can leverage their local expertise and community relationships to create a seamless and inclusive process for bringing this innovative technology to Wylfa."
The Wylfa site, which previously hosted a now-decommissioned nuclear power plant, has been identified as an ideal location for SMR deployment due to its existing infrastructure, skilled workforce, and community support for nuclear energy. The agreement between GBE-N and IACC is a critical step in realizing this vision and positioning the UK as a global leader in the next generation of nuclear power.
"We are excited to work alongside GBE-N to bring this cutting-edge technology to Anglesey," said Jane Doe, Leader of Isle of Anglesey County Council. "SMRs represent a unique opportunity to revitalize our local economy, create high-skilled jobs, and contribute to the UK's broader decarbonization efforts. This collaboration will ensure that the project is delivered in a way that benefits our community and the environment."
The signing of the Collaboration Agreement between GBE-N and IACC follows a series of recent developments in the UK's SMR sector, including the government's announcement of a £210 million funding package to support the commercialization and deployment of this innovative nuclear technology. As the country works to meet its ambitious net-zero emissions targets, the successful implementation of SMRs at Wylfa and other sites across the UK will be crucial in diversifying the nation's energy mix and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
