Outcry Over 'Psychological Torture' at Sprawling ICE Detention Camp

Detainees describe dire conditions at a remote Texas facility, including dust-filled tents, frigid temperatures, and leaking roofs. Advocates call for urgent reforms to address the crisis.
Detainees held at the sprawling Camp East Montana immigration detention facility in West Texas have come forward with harrowing accounts of the conditions they've endured, describing a scene of psychological torture and environmental neglect that has exacerbated the climate crisis.
D, a young Venezuelan man who was detained at the camp, painted a bleak picture of life inside the massive tent structures. "Dust was everywhere, covering people's blankets and clogging their airways," he recalled. The air conditioning blasted constantly, keeping the living areas, which stretched the length of two football fields, at near-freezing temperatures despite the warm weather outside.
Even the simple task of sleeping was a challenge, as rain leaked through the tarps, leaving people to awake on wet mattresses. These conditions, coupled with the remote desert location of the facility, have drawn sharp criticism from advocates who say the detainees are being subjected to inhumane treatment.
