Peruvian Presidential Race Wide Open, Runoff Looming

As Peru heads to the polls, a crowded field of over 30 presidential candidates leaves the outcome uncertain, with a likely runoff election on the horizon.
As Peruvians prepare to head to the polls this Sunday for the first round of the presidential election, the race remains wide open with no clear frontrunner. More than 30 candidates are vying for the country's top job, a historically large and fragmented field that has left the eventual winner uncertain.
The leading candidates in the race include Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, Pedro Castillo, a left-wing rural schoolteacher, and Hernando de Soto, a free-market economist. However, polls show none of the candidates commanding a majority of support, suggesting a runoff election is all but assured.
