Surprise Election Upset in Slovenia: Freedom Movement Party Leads Conservatives

In a tight race, the liberal Freedom Movement Party has taken a narrow lead over the opposition conservatives, according to exit polls in Slovenia's closely watched election.
Slovenia's Freedom Movement Party has taken a surprise lead over the governing conservative coalition in the country's closely watched parliamentary election, according to exit polls. The liberal opposition party, led by political newcomer Robert Golob, is projected to win around 35% of the vote, edging out the center-right Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) of Prime Minister Janez Jansa, which is expected to take 30% of the ballots cast.
The results mark a significant shift in the country's political landscape, with the Freedom Movement - formed just months ago - poised to form the next government. Golob, a former business executive, has campaigned on a platform of environmental protection, anti-corruption measures, and strengthening Slovenia's ties with the European Union.
