Senators Aim to 'Codify' Anthropic's AI Safeguards into Law
Anthropic's clashes with the Pentagon have reached Congress, as lawmakers work to enshrine the company's red lines on autonomous weapons and mass surveillance into legislation.
In a move to solidify Anthropic's stance on the responsible development of AI, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) is spearheading a new bill that would codify the company's red lines and ensure human oversight in decisions involving life-and-death scenarios. Concurrently, Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) has introduced legislation to limit the Defense Department's ability to use AI for mass surveillance of American citizens.
The ongoing tensions between Anthropic and the Pentagon escalated earlier this month when the Trump administration blacklisted the AI company, designating it a supply-chain risk after it set boundaries on how the military could utilize its AI models. Anthropic has since filed a lawsuit, accusing the government of violating its constitutional rights. The company has remained steadfast in its position, insisting that the ultimate decisions in matters of life and death must be made by humans, not autonomous systems.
