Tankers Resist Iran's Strait of Hormuz Toll Demands

Tanker firms are being urged by maritime authorities to refuse Iran's demands for levies in exchange for safe passage through the vital Strait of Hormuz. The strait, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, is one of the world's most important oil choke points, with an estimated 21 million barrels of oil passing through daily.

Tensions have been high in the Middle East region in recent months, with Iran being accused of attacking several oil tankers near the strait. As a result, maritime security firms and regional authorities are advising tanker operators to avoid paying any toll fees or other levies to Iranian authorities in return for protection while transiting the vital waterway.
