4Chan Fined £520K for UK Online Safety Violations

US-based online forum 4Chan faces a £520,000 penalty from UK regulators for failing to protect children from accessing inappropriate content on its platform.
4Chan, the notorious US-based online message board, has been slapped with a £520,000 fine by UK regulators for breaching online safety laws. The hefty penalty stems from the platform's failure to implement proper age verification checks, which allowed children to easily access pornographic content on the site.
The fine, imposed by the UK's Office of Communications (Ofcom), is the first of its kind under the country's new Online Safety Act. The legislation, which came into effect in 2021, requires digital platforms to protect users, particularly minors, from harmful and illegal content.
Ofcom's investigation found that 4Chan had neglected to put in place adequate measures to restrict access to adult material, despite being aware of the significant presence of underage users on the platform. As a result, the regulator concluded that the website had failed to fulfil its duty of care, putting children at risk of exposure to explicit and potentially traumatic content.
