According to the Femicide Census, sons were suspects in almost one in five killings of UK women over the past 12 months, marking the highest rate of matricide in 16 years.
The names of 19 women believed to have been killed by their sons in the last year will be read out in parliament on Thursday, as lawmakers and advocates grapple with this troubling trend. Jess Phillips, a Member of Parliament, will once again read out the names of the 108 women killed in the UK by men – or where a man has been charged – in the last 12 months. This annual ritual has become a somber reminder of the ongoing epidemic of violence against women in the country.
