Liamine Zeroual, the former president of Algeria who served during the country's devastating civil war in the 1990s, has died at the age of 84. Zeroual's tenure as president was marked by the ongoing violence and unrest that plagued Algeria for nearly a decade, as Islamist insurgents battled government forces in a conflict that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians.
Zeroual first came to power in 1994 after the military canceled elections that Islamist party the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) was poised to win. He was initially appointed as head of the High State Council, a transitional governing body, before being elected president in 1995 in what was widely seen as a flawed electoral process.
