In a bold move to solidify its presence in the burgeoning satellite internet market, Amazon has announced the acquisition of Globalstar, a leading provider of satellite communication services, for a staggering $10.8 billion. This strategic acquisition marks a significant step forward in the e-commerce giant's ambitions to challenge industry leaders like SpaceX and OneWeb in the race to deliver high-speed, global internet connectivity from space.
The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, will see Amazon leverage Globalstar's existing satellite network and infrastructure to enhance its own Project Kuiper initiative, a multi-billion-dollar effort to launch a constellation of 3,236 low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that will provide internet access to underserved and remote regions around the world.
