Amazon Secures Major Satellite Deals to Challenge Starlink

Amazon announces merger with Globalstar and partnership with Apple to provide satellite connectivity for iPhones and Apple Watches, rivaling SpaceX's Starlink network.
Amazon has made a significant move in the satellite connectivity market, announcing two major deals that solidify its position as a formidable competitor to SpaceX's Starlink network. The e-commerce giant has revealed a merger agreement to acquire satellite operator Globalstar, as well as a partnership with Apple to provide satellite service for its popular iPhones and Apple Watches.
The $11.6 billion acquisition of Globalstar will help Amazon enter the growing Direct-to-Device (D2D) market, where satellites can directly provide connectivity to mobile phones. This move comes years after Amazon reportedly rejected an offer from Starlink to collaborate on satellite services.
In addition to the Globalstar merger, Amazon and Apple have signed an agreement that will make Amazon the primary satellite service provider for iPhone and Apple Watch features. This partnership will allow Apple users to benefit from the connectivity provided by Amazon's satellite network, known as Amazon Leo, formerly called Kuiper Systems.
