Ambulances Torched in Possible Antisemitic Attack in London

UK police investigate arson of ambulances belonging to a Jewish emergency service, treating it as a hate crime incident.
London - British authorities have launched an investigation into an apparent arson attack on ambulances belonging to a Jewish emergency service, treating the incident as a hate crime. The attack occurred at the headquarters of Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer ambulance corps, in the Stamford Hill neighborhood of London.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning and caused significant damage to several ambulances parked on the premises. No injuries were reported, but the incident has raised concerns within the local Jewish community about a possible antisemitic motive.
"This appears to have been a targeted attack on a charity that provides vital medical services to the community," said Detective Chief Superintendent Michael Britton, the head of the Metropolitan Police's hate crime unit. "We are treating this extremely seriously and are pursuing all lines of inquiry to identify those responsible."
The Hatzola emergency service, staffed by volunteer medics, has been serving the Jewish community in London for decades, providing rapid response to medical emergencies within the area. The organization expressed shock and dismay at the attack, which they believe was motivated by prejudice.
"We are deeply saddened and outraged by this incident," said a spokesperson for Hatzola. "These ambulances are a vital lifeline for our community, and to see them deliberately targeted in this way is truly devastating. We call on the authorities to do everything in their power to bring the perpetrators to justice."
The attack comes amid a broader trend of rising antisemitism in the UK, with the Community Security Trust, a charity that monitors anti-Jewish hatred, reporting a record number of anti-Semitic incidents in 2021. Jewish leaders have expressed alarm at the surge in hate crimes targeting their community, and have urged the government to take stronger action to address the issue.
"This attack on Hatzola is a despicable act that strikes at the heart of our community," said the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth, Ephraim Mirvis. "We stand in solidarity with our Jewish brethren and call on all people of goodwill to condemn this hateful and cowardly behavior."
The investigation into the arson attack is ongoing, and police have appealed for any witnesses or those with relevant information to come forward. The incident has sparked renewed calls for more robust measures to tackle antisemitism and protect Jewish institutions and individuals from such hate-fueled attacks.
