Artemis Crew Captures Stunning 'Earthset' Image During Historic Lunar Flyby

NASA releases breathtaking 'Earthset' photo from the Artemis II mission, echoing the iconic 'Earthrise' image from the Apollo 8 mission.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released a stunning new photograph captured by the Artemis II crew during their historic lunar flyby. The image, dubbed the 'Earthset,' showcases our home planet as it disappears behind the lunar surface, echoing the iconic 'Earthrise' image taken during the Apollo 8 mission over 50 years ago.
The Artemis II mission, which is the second crewed flight of NASA's Artemis program, blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on November 16, 2023, with a four-person crew aboard the Orion spacecraft. As the spacecraft made its closest approach to the Moon, the crew members had the opportunity to capture this breathtaking view of the Earth setting behind the lunar horizon.
The 'Earthset' image is a powerful reminder of the fragility and beauty of our planet, as seen from the unique vantage point of the Moon. It showcases the Earth as a pale blue dot, dwarfed by the vast, desolate lunar landscape, and serves as a poignant reminder of the awe-inspiring scale of the universe.
