Automakers Downsize Electrification Plans as Demand Slows

GM lays off workers and idles plant as electric truck demand craters due to tariffs and reduced federal incentives, forcing automakers to scale back EV production plans.
Automakers have been forced to scale back their electrification plans as demand for electric vehicles, particularly electric trucks, has slowed dramatically in the US. The imposition of tariffs and the abolishment of federal EV incentives are being blamed for this trend, as consumers continue to struggle with range anxiety and towing concerns when it comes to adopting all-electric versions of full-size trucks.
As a result, General Motors has been forced to idle its Factory Zero plant in Hamtramck, Michigan, which assembles the Cadillac Escalade IQ, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and GMC Hummer EVs. Thirteen hundred workers have been temporarily laid off until the plant restarts on April 13.
