Belgian Authorities Investigate Suspected Cameroonian Separatists for War Crimes

Three suspected Cameroonian separatists have been detained in Belgium as part of a war crimes investigation. Prosecutors allege the group is raising funds to support the armed struggle.
Belgian authorities have detained three individuals suspected of being Cameroonian separatists, as part of an investigation into alleged war crimes. The prosecutors state that the group is reportedly raising money to support the armed struggle in Cameroon's Anglophone regions, where a violent conflict has been ongoing for several years.
Conflict in Cameroon's Anglophone Regions
The crisis in Cameroon's Anglophone regions began in 2016 when English-speaking teachers and lawyers protested against the dominance of the French language and the marginalization of the Anglophone minority. The protesters' demands for greater autonomy or secession were met with a crackdown by the government, led by President Paul Biya, who has been in power since 1982.
The situation quickly spiraled into an armed conflict, with Anglophone separatist groups taking up arms to fight for an independent state called Ambazonia. The government has responded with a heavy-handed military campaign, leading to the deaths of thousands of civilians and the displacement of over 700,000 people.
