Bill Gates-Backed TerraPower Breaks Ground on Revolutionary Nuclear Plant

TerraPower, a company financially backed by Bill Gates, gets NRC approval to begin construction on a pioneering new sodium-cooled, fast-neutron nuclear reactor in Wyoming.
TerraPower, a company financially backed by Bill Gates, has received the green light from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to begin construction on a groundbreaking new nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. This marks the first construction approval granted by the NRC in nearly a decade, signaling a potential resurgence in nuclear energy development in the United States.
The reactor design, called Natrium, features several innovative technologies that set it apart from traditional nuclear plants. Most notably, it will use liquid sodium as the primary coolant instead of the high-pressure steam found in most reactors. This allows the reactor to operate at lower pressures, potentially mitigating some of the safety risks associated with conventional nuclear power. Additionally, the Natrium design incorporates energy storage capabilities, which could help improve the flexibility and reliability of the plant's power output.
