Bird Lovers Advised: Take Down Feeders to Stop Avian Disease Spread

The RSPB urges removing bird feeders from May to October to curb the spread of parasitic diseases like trichomonosis, which have devastated species like the greenfinch.
In a proactive measure to combat the spread of avian diseases, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is advising bird lovers to take down their seed and nut feeders during the summer months. This recommendation aims to reduce the clustering of birds around these feeding stations, where parasitic diseases like trichomonosis can more easily transmit between feathered visitors.
The charity's call to action comes as certain bird species, such as the greenfinch, have seen their numbers plummet due to the proliferation of these parasitic diseases. By removing the feeders from May to October, the RSPB hopes to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks and protect the health of garden birds.
