Birmingham City's owners, Knighthead Capital Management, are exploring the purchase of new franchises in Prem Rugby as the RFU plans a major shake-up of the sport's top division.
Birmingham City's owner, Knighthead Capital Management, is among a number of American investors exploring the purchase of potential new franchises in Prem Rugby before a radical shake-up of the sport due to be ratified by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) on Friday.
The RFU Council will vote at Twickenham on proposals to ringfence the 10-team Prem with no promotion or relegation until 2030, when a staged expansion is planned, beginning with the addition of two more teams.

This move by the RFU is aimed at providing more stability and financial security for the top clubs in the league, as well as creating opportunities for new investors to enter the sport.
Knighthead Capital Management, the owner of Birmingham City football club, is among the American investors reportedly in early discussions about the potential purchase of one of these new Prem Rugby franchises.

The proposed changes to the Prem Rugby structure could pave the way for more international investment and expansion of the sport, as the RFU seeks to capitalize on the growing popularity of rugby union globally.
While the details of the discussions between Knighthead and the RFU are still unclear, the potential move by the Birmingham City owners into rugby union would represent a significant diversification of their sports investment portfolio.
It remains to be seen whether Knighthead and other American investors will ultimately decide to purchase one of the new Prem Rugby franchises, but the proposed changes to the league structure have certainly piqued the interest of international sports business leaders.
