Brave Gaza Women Journalists Who Refuse to be Silenced

Profiling the courageous female journalists in Gaza who risk their lives to expose Israel's actions and ensure the world doesn't look away.
In the face of immense adversity and danger, a group of intrepid women journalists in Gaza have refused to be silenced. These brave reporters have risked life and limb to continue exposing Israel's crimes and human rights abuses to the world, even as the conflict takes a heavy toll on their community.
One such journalist, Riham Badawi, has covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for over a decade, reporting on the devastating impact of the blockade, military strikes, and economic hardship faced by Gazans. Despite enduring personal tragedies, including the loss of her home during the 2014 Gaza war, Badawi remains steadfast in her commitment to bearing witness and giving a voice to her people.
Badawi and her colleagues know all too well the price they may pay for their refusal to stay silent. Several have been injured or killed by Israeli forces while on the job, including Yaser Murtaja, a cameraman who was fatally shot by an Israeli sniper in 2018 while covering a protest.
Yet, the women of Gaza's press corps continue to document the daily realities of life under occupation, from the crippling shortages of electricity and clean water to the trauma inflicted on children by repeated military assaults. Their work stands in stark contrast to the narrative often promoted by Israeli authorities, which seeks to downplay or justify the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
Nariman El-Mofty, a photojournalist, has captured the human toll of the conflict in heartbreaking detail, her images serving as a powerful rebuke to those who would prefer to look away.
