Businesses on US-Canada Border Struggle as Canadians Avoid Crossing

Shops and restaurants along the US-Canada border are facing a decline in Canadian tourists, hurting local businesses that rely on cross-border travel.
Businesses along the United States-Canada border are struggling to survive as fewer Canadians are willing to cross the border, a trend that has intensified under the Trump administration. Shops, restaurants, and other establishments that once thrived on Canadian tourism are now fighting for their livelihoods.
In the border town of Lewiston, New York, bakery owner Aimee Loughran is finishing a special order cake for a local police officer's retirement party, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise challenging business climate. The Lewiston strip, dotted with cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings from the 1800s, is normally a magnet for tourists, including Canadians whose homes can be seen from the nearby Niagara River.
