California Tech Firm Fined $1.1M for Selling High School Students' Data

GoFan penalized for breaching privacy laws after students used service to sign up for school events, including football games and prom.
GoFan, a ticketing platform owned by PlayOn, a media company that streams high school sports, has been slapped with a $1.1 million fine by the California Privacy Protection Agency for illegally collecting and selling the personal data of high school students across the state.
The students had used the GoFan service to sign up for a variety of school events, including football games, school plays, and even senior prom. Before completing their registrations, the students were prompted to accept the company's terms, which included allowing GoFan to collect their personal information and sell it to advertisers. Crucially, the students did not have the option to opt-out of this data collection and sharing.
