Chalk Prevails as Top Seeds Dominate in Women's March Madness Openers

Recapping the first-round action from the 2023 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament, where higher-seeded teams cruised to victory on an opening day filled with blowouts.
Baylor erased a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Nebraska 67-62, leading a day where better seeds went 16-0 in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament. Taliah Scott scored 15 points for the sixth-seeded Bears, who made 11 of 14 free throws down the stretch to secure the comeback victory.
After Baylor led 19-11 after the first quarter, the Bears went cold and found themselves trailing 50-41 with 9:33 remaining. But Baylor then turned up the full-court press and forced six turnovers by Nebraska in the final period to seal the win.

Elsewhere, LSU, Texas, and TCU all rolled to dominant first-round victories, setting the tone for a day where the higher seeds prevailed across the board. The chalk held true as none of the 16 top-seeded teams were upset in their tournament openers.

The lopsided results underscored the parity gap that still exists in women's college basketball, where the elite programs continue to separate themselves from the rest of the field. While there were no Cinderella stories on day one, the action is sure to heat up as the tournament progresses and the stakes get higher.
