Chiefs Acquire Jets QB Fields with Mahomes' Return Date Unclear

The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly traded for Jets quarterback Justin Fields as a backup for the injured Patrick Mahomes, whose return from torn knee ligaments is uncertain.
The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly agreed to a trade that will send quarterback Justin Fields from the New York Jets to serve as a backup for the injured Patrick Mahomes. The Jets will receive a sixth-round draft pick in 2027 as part of the deal, which is pending a physical.
The 27-year-old Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets last March, with $30 million guaranteed. He started for most of the season before being benched in Week 12 in favor of Tyrod Taylor. Fields finished the year on injured reserve with a knee injury, ending the season with seven touchdowns, one interception, and 1,259 passing yards.
The trade comes as the Chiefs face uncertainty around Mahomes' return from torn knee ligaments. The star quarterback's availability for the start of the 2026 season remains unclear. Fields will now provide experienced backup support as Mahomes works to recover and regain his form.
