Childcare Center Beats ICE Surge: Inspiring Story of Resilience
In the face of the ICE surge that swept through the Twin Cities in January, a Spanish-immersion childcare center in Minneapolis found itself on the frontlines of the battle to protect immigrant families. But through the tireless efforts of dozens of volunteers, mostly over the age of 70, the center not only survived the ordeal, but is now emerging stronger than ever.
As parents shuffled their toddlers out the door on a February afternoon, the center's director's husband, Michael, kept a watchful eye on the building's security footage, vigilantly scanning for any signs of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity. This had become his daily routine since the federal agents descended on the area as part of Operation Metro Surge.
