City-Centre Brownfield Site Transformed By Mine Water By-Product

Innovative use of ochre from mine water treatment helps stabilize contaminated soil, unlocking a former lead works for 126 new homes in Chester.
An innovative approach to managing contaminated land is transforming a former lead works in the heart of Chester, England into a thriving residential development. The key? Ochre, a by-product from the treatment of mine water, is being used to stabilize the contaminated soil on the brownfield site, making way for the construction of 126 new homes.
The former lead works, located in the city center, had long been considered a blighted area, its contaminated soil posing a significant challenge for any potential redevelopment. However, the Minerva Homes project, led by housing developer Redrow Homes, has found a unique solution to this problem - using ochre from a nearby mine water treatment plant.
