Cracking the Code: AI Chatbot Helps Trace Mysterious Outbreak at County Fair

Health officials in Illinois turned to ChatGPT to investigate a puzzling outbreak linked to a county fair, but the bot's true impact remains unclear.
In a surprising twist, health officials in Illinois have turned to an AI chatbot to help solve a perplexing outbreak connected to a county fair. The investigation, which spanned multiple counties, revealed a concerning pattern of Salmonella enterica serotype Agbeni cases, all linked to the same event. But whether the AI assistant, ChatGPT, was truly helpful or not remains a matter of debate.
The first clue came from the county sheriff, who noted on August 5, 2024 that an unusually high number of potential jurors for an upcoming trial reported having a stomach bug. This prompted the state health department to notify Brown County officials of a confirmed S. enterica Agbeni case on August 12. With these initial leads, county health officials launched an investigation that ultimately identified 13 cases, seven of which were laboratory-confirmed, and six that were considered probable due to close contact with the confirmed cases.
What connected all of these individuals? A visit to the Brown County fair. The outbreak, which spanned five counties, had a common thread: everyone affected had attended the same event. This prompted the health officials to turn to an unlikely ally – ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI.
