Cybersecurity Parties: Where Breaking Up With Big Tech Feels Like a Night Out

Tech organizers are turning cybersecurity education into fun, social events - from book clubs to dance parties. Discover how they're making online privacy accessible.
Cybersecurity may not be the most glamorous topic, but a growing number of organizers are making it a whole lot more fun. In cities across the US, tech activists are bringing the fight for online privacy to unexpected places - from dance clubs to book clubs.
Take Imani Thompson, for example. The cybersecurity organizer shows up at Wonderville Bar in Brooklyn looking ready to party. But her event, Break Up With Google, has a serious purpose: helping attendees understand how to protect themselves from surveillance through major tech services.
"It's cybersecurity disguised as a party," says Thompson, who hosts the event with the New York City-based tech organizing coalition Cypurr Collective. The goal is to make learning about digital security fun and accessible, with DJs playing late into the night.
