Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila, currently raging in the Solomon Sea, has unleashed a trail of destruction across the Solomon Islands, with peak sustained winds reaching a devastating 115mph (185km/h) and gusts up to 160mph. According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, this powerful storm has made history as the strongest cyclone recorded this far north in the Solomon Sea.
Widespread Damage and Displacement
The storm's fury has left a trail of devastation in its wake, particularly in the Western, Choiseul, and Isabel provinces of the Solomon Islands. Schools, clinics, and homes have been damaged, and the government is now prioritizing humanitarian assistance efforts. Approximately 120 people have been displaced, and a staggering 73,000 people have been affected overall by the cyclone's impacts.
