Dems Push to Curb Trump's Iran War Powers Amid Ceasefire

House Democrats aim to pass a measure limiting Trump's authority over Iran, but Republicans are expected to block the resolution, reflecting Capitol Hill's unease over the fragile US-Iran standoff.
House Democrats are making a push to pass a resolution that would curtail Donald Trump's war powers over Iran – a move that is almost certain to be blocked by Republicans, but one that signals the unease on Capitol Hill about the Middle Eastern conflict that currently remains on pause with no clear endgame.
The vote, scheduled for Thursday morning, will use a procedure called unanimous consent, which allows legislation to pass the chamber instantly without debate or a formal tally, as long as no member objects. However, any single lawmaker can kill the resolution by objecting, and Republicans are expected to do just that.
The move by House Democrats comes amid a fragile two-week US-Iran ceasefire, as the two nations seek to defuse tensions that nearly erupted into outright war earlier this year. Trump's decision to order the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in January brought the US and Iran to the brink of conflict, sparking fears of a broader regional war.
