Desperate Rohingya Refugees Risk Perilous Sea Voyages to Escape Crisis

Thousands of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh risk their lives on dangerous sea voyages in hopes of finding safety and a better life. Despite high casualties, the escape effort continues year after year.
The Rohingya people, a Muslim minority group in Myanmar, have faced systematic persecution, violence, and discrimination for decades. Countless Rohingya have been forced to flee their homes in Myanmar, seeking refuge in neighboring Bangladesh. However, the situation for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh remains precarious, with limited access to food, shelter, and basic necessities. In a desperate attempt to escape the crisis, thousands of Rohingya risk their lives each year by embarking on dangerous sea voyages to other countries in search of a better life.
These perilous journeys on overcrowded, rickety boats often prove fatal, with hundreds of Rohingya drowning in the treacherous waters between Myanmar, Bangladesh, and neighboring Southeast Asian nations. Despite the high risk of injury or death, the Rohingya continue to flee, driven by a lack of safety, security, and opportunity in their home region.
