Detroit Man's Wrongful Conviction Overturned After 25 Years

A Detroit man's murder conviction has been overturned after over 25 years in prison, as prosecutors acknowledge his confession was coerced by police.
Detroit resident George Calicut Jr. has spent over 25 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. Calicut was convicted in 1999 for the murder of Virgie Perkins at her Detroit home, despite a lack of witnesses or evidence connecting him to the crime. However, a recent ruling by a Detroit-area judge has now erased Calicut's conviction, after prosecutors acknowledged that his confession was coerced by a rogue police officer.
Prosecutors in Wayne County stated that recent DNA testing further supports the lack of any evidence tying Calicut to Perkins' murder. This ruling comes as a major victory for Calicut, who has maintained his innocence throughout his over two-decade-long incarceration.
