Elite Colleges Witness Surge in Students With Disabilities

As colleges across the U.S. report a dramatic increase in students with disabilities, top institutions like Macalester are adapting to better support these learners.
Higher education institutions across the United States are witnessing a significant spike in the number of students with disabilities enrolling, including at some of the country's most prestigious colleges and universities. At Macalester College, a private liberal arts school in St. Paul, Minnesota, the proportion of students with disabilities has surged from just 5% a decade ago to a remarkable 29% in 2024.
This trend is not isolated to Macalester, as many other elite schools are reporting similar sharp rises in the enrollment of students with varying abilities and needs. Experts attribute this shift to a combination of factors, including increased awareness, improved accessibility, and a greater emphasis on inclusivity within the higher education system.
