Embattled FDA Vaccine Chief Leaves Agency for Second Time

FDA Commissioner Marky Makary announces the departure of Dr. Vinay Prasad, the agency's vaccine chief, who is leaving for his academic role at UCSF.
Vinay Prasad, the embattled vaccine chief at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is once again leaving the agency - the second time in less than a year that he has departed after decisions involving the review of vaccinations and specialty drugs for rare diseases.
In an email to FDA staff late on Friday, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary announced that Prasad will be departing the agency at the end of April to return to his academic job at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).
This latest exit comes after previous decisions made by Prasad that have drawn scrutiny, including his role in the agency's review of vaccines and specialty drugs for rare diseases. The reasons behind his departure, however, remain unclear.
