EU Aims to Boost West Africa Ties Amid Sahel Security Shifts

EU plans to strengthen security and economic cooperation in West Africa as regional powers vie for influence after coups in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
The European Union is seeking a new strategic approach to the Sahel region of West Africa, as the geopolitical landscape shifts following a series of recent military coups in the area. After the 2022-2023 takeovers in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, the new junta regimes have turned to Russia, China, and even the United States for support, challenging the EU's traditional influence.
To counter this growing international rivalry, the EU plans to invest more in the region's security and economic development in an effort to forge closer ties with West African nations. The bloc's new strategy aims to address the underlying causes of instability, such as poverty, governance issues, and the threat of terrorism.
