EU Urged to Tighten Big Tech Rules for Smart TV Dominance

Major global broadcasters call on EU to enforce tough regulations against Google, Amazon, Apple, and Samsung's control over smart TV operating systems.
In a strongly worded letter, the world's largest broadcasters have urged the European Union to enforce its strictest regulations against the virtual TV and smart assistant platforms dominated by tech giants like Google, Amazon, Apple, and Samsung. The call to action comes from the Association of Commercial Television and Video on Demand Services in Europe (ACT), whose members include prominent media companies such as Canal+, RTL, Mediaset, ITV, Paramount+, NBCUniversal, Walt Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, Sky, and TF1 Groupe.
The broadcasters argue that these tech conglomerates have established a stranglehold on the smart TV operating system market, effectively acting as "gatekeepers" that can dictate the terms of access and visibility for other content providers. This monopolistic control, the letter claims, threatens to undermine the ability of traditional media companies to reach and engage with their audiences on these crucial digital platforms.
