Europe Refuses Trump's Call for Naval Blockade of Hormuz Strait

European leaders reject the Trump administration's demands to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz, raising tensions over securing critical global oil trade routes amid ongoing Iran-US conflict.
Washington's calls for European allies to join a naval mission to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz have been firmly rejected, as European leaders refuse to be drawn into the escalating conflict between the US and Iran.
The Trump administration has been pressing European nations to contribute ships to a proposed maritime security initiative in the Persian Gulf, in response to a series of attacks on oil tankers that the US has blamed on Iran. However, European diplomats have made it clear they have no intention of participating in what they see as a US-led military operation against Iran.
Instead, the EU is pursuing its own plan for a European-led naval mission to monitor shipping in the Gulf of Aden and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key chokepoint for global oil trade. This proposal is seen as a more neutral approach that would not be directly confronting Iran or joining the US campaign of maximum pressure against Tehran.
