Exam-Focused Schools Leaving Students Unprepared for Careers

Former minister Alan Milburn says 'exam-obsessed' education system fails to equip young people with necessary 'soft skills' for the workforce.
A new report from former cabinet minister Alan Milburn has found that the UK's exam-focused school system is leaving young people unprepared for the workforce. Milburn, who is leading a government-commissioned review into young people and work, says the education system has become overly focused on academic sorting rather than ensuring real-world readiness.
Citing a recent survey, Milburn noted that most teachers believe their students are leaving education without the necessary soft skills needed for adult life and careers. This 'exam-obsessed' approach, he argues, is failing to equip the next generation with the adaptability, communication abilities, and problem-solving skills that employers increasingly demand.
