Facial Recognition Error Leads to Wrongful Arrest of Asian Man

Software engineer Alvi Choudhury was arrested for a burglary he did not commit due to a biased facial recognition system that confused him with another person of south Asian heritage.
Facial recognition technology deployed across the UK has led to the wrongful arrest of a 26-year-old software engineer, Alvi Choudhury, who was mistaken for a burglary suspect over 100 miles away. Choudhury, a resident of Southampton, was working at home when police arrived, handcuffed him, and held him in custody for nearly 10 hours before releasing him at 2 AM.
The incident highlights the ongoing bias and accuracy issues with facial recognition systems, which have a higher rate of misidentification for people of color, particularly those of Asian and African descent. Choudhury is now claiming damages against the Thames Valley Police for the traumatic experience.
