FBI's Vast Data Troves Enable Mass Surveillance, Evading AI Firms' Resistance

Anthropic fought against government misuse of its AI, but the FBI still accesses vast data troves to surveil citizens at scale without needing advanced AI technology.
Despite Anthropic's staunch resistance against the government's attempts to misuse its cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology for mass surveillance, the FBI has found another way to monitor citizens across the United States on a massive scale. According to recent statements from Kash Patel, the FBI director, the agency can conduct sweeping surveillance operations without relying on AI at all, thanks to its expansive access to a vast trove of citizen data.
At the heart of the standoff between Anthropic and the Department of Defense has been the AI firm's refusal to allow its groundbreaking technology to be leveraged for indiscriminate domestic surveillance. However, Patel's remarks demonstrate that even in the absence of cooperation from AI companies, the authorities have other means to track and monitor American citizens on a large scale.
