Former Ukraine Envoy Shares Insights on 4-Year War Anniversary

As the Ukraine-Russia war enters its 4th year, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine reflects on U.S. efforts to broker peace talks and the path forward.
Ukraine's ongoing conflict with Russia, now in its 4th year, has been a complex and challenging geopolitical situation for the United States to navigate. Bridget Brink, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, sat down with NPR's Mary Louise Kelly to share her unique insights and perspective on the state of the war and the U.S.'s role in brokering potential peace talks.
Brink, who is now running for Congress, served as the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine from 2019 to 2022, giving her a front-row seat to the escalation of tensions and the outbreak of full-scale war in February 2022. During her tenure, she worked tirelessly to strengthen the diplomatic and security ties between the U.S. and Ukraine, providing critical support and guidance to the Ukrainian government and military.
As the war enters its 4th year, Brink emphasized the importance of the U.S. maintaining its unwavering support for Ukraine. "The United States has been a steadfast ally throughout this conflict, providing Ukraine with the military, economic, and humanitarian aid necessary to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," she stated. "It is crucial that we continue this support, as Ukraine fights to liberate its occupied territories and push back against Russian aggression."

"Russia has demonstrated a clear unwillingness to negotiate in good faith, and Ukraine has rightly refused to accept any compromise that would result in the loss of its sovereign territory," she said. "However, we must explore every avenue to bring an end to this devastating conflict and find a diplomatic solution that respects Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity."

"The United States and our allies must continue to coordinate our efforts, both in providing military and economic support to Ukraine and in maintaining the robust sanctions regime against Russia," she said. "Only by presenting a united front can we compel Russia to engage in meaningful negotiations and work towards a just and lasting peace."
