Spanish authorities have launched a frantic search for a 20-year-old American college student who mysteriously disappeared during a visit to a beachfront nightclub in Barcelona. James Gracey, a junior at the University of Alabama, was last seen in the early hours of Sunday morning leaving the popular Opium Mar nightclub in the city's Barceloneta neighborhood.
According to local police, Gracey was on a study abroad trip with his university when he decided to visit the iconic nightspot, which sits directly on the Mediterranean Sea. Witnesses reported seeing him leave the club alone around 3 a.m., but his whereabouts after that point remain unknown.
Gracey's parents, who live in Birmingham, Alabama, were notified of their son's disappearance shortly after he vanished. They immediately flew to Spain and have been working closely with the Mossos d'Esquadra, the regional Catalan police force, to aid in the search efforts.
